From Hobbyist to Hero
Frontline NHS staff are fighting a daily battle in extremely difficult conditions to take care of us. The supply and delivery of the correct PPE is vital if our NHS heroes are to take care of us without endangering their own lives and this has inspired a 3D Printing hobbyist from Southampton to put his skills to good use whilst in self-isolation.
Damien Long has set up 3D Printing in his garden shed and is making the most if his time at home by printing visors for the NHS front line staff. He has have already received requests for his visors from local hospitals. He now aims to manufacture 3,000 visors in 30 days.
Following a crowdfunding campaign online to purchase the necessary materials, Damien raised £2,000 in under 24 hours. His efforts to raise funds attracted the attention of Dodd Group and O’Neill & Brennan with both companies stepping in to purchase additional 3D Printers for him to work with. His man-cave has now become the home to a potentially life-saving cottage industry and typifies the spirit of innovation in the face of adversity.
